Inferring Nitrogen Deposition from Plant Community Composition 2

چکیده
15 Chronically elevated reactive nitrogen deposition has a severe impact on many ecosystems, and there is 16 widespread interest in the possibility of using plant community composition to estimate the level of 17 nitrogen deposition and consequent impacts. Existing approaches use a variety of simple measures 18 including functional type ratios, Ellenberg numbers, and diversity indices. We propose an alternative 19 approach in which species-environment models are constructed using national datasets designed to 20 capture broad-scale deposition patterns. We construct models using partial least squares, weighted 21 average, and maximum likelihood Gaussian logit regression for two British semi-natural habitats, and 22 test how well they predict N deposition by cross-validation. We find that performance is good with R 23 values up to 0.7, and suggest that such models may be a useful addition to the bioindication toolbox. 24

Nitrogen deposition alters soil chemical properties and bacterial communities in the Inner Mongolia grassland.
Nitrogen deposition has dramatically altered biodiversity and ecosystem functioning on the earth; however, its effects on soil bacterial community and the underlying mechanisms of these effects have not been thoroughly examined. Changes in ecosystems caused by nitrogen deposition have traditionally been attributed to increased nitrogen content. In fact, nitrogen deposition not only leads to inc...
متن کاملResponses of Plant Community Composition and Biomass Production to Warming and Nitrogen Deposition in a Temperate Meadow Ecosystem
Climate change has profound influences on plant community composition and ecosystem functions. However, its effects on plant community composition and biomass production are not well understood. A four-year field experiment was conducted to examine the effects of warming, nitrogen (N) addition, and their interactions on plant community composition and biomass production in a temperate meadow ec...
متن کاملSimulated nitrogen deposition affects community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in northern hardwood forests
Our previous investigation found elevated nitrogen deposition caused declines in abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associated with forest trees, but little is known about how nitrogen affects the AMF community composition and structure within forest ecosystems. We hypothesized that N deposition would lead to significant changes in the AMF community structure. We studied the divers...
متن کاملResource Availability Drives Responses of Soil Microbial Communities to Short-term Precipitation and Nitrogen Addition in a Desert Shrubland
Desert microbes are expected to be substantially sensitive to global environmental changes, such as precipitation changes and elevated nitrogen deposition. However, the effects of precipitation changes and nitrogen enrichment on their diversity and community composition remain poorly understood. We conducted a field experiment over 2 years with multi-level precipitation and nitrogen addition in...
متن کاملDramatic changes in ectomycorrhizal community composition, root tip abundance and mycelial production along a stand-scale nitrogen deposition gradient.
• Nitrogen (N) availability is known to influence ectomycorrhizal fungal components, such as fungal community composition, biomass of root tips and production of mycelia, but effects have never been demonstrated within the same forest. • We measured concurrently the abundance of ectomycorrhizal root tips and the production of external mycelia, and explored the changes in the ectomycorrhizal com...
